Fleas, worms and ticks are parasites who often take up residence in your pet's ears, coats, or intestines.
But please don’t worry, as there is a preventative monthly treatment available. And don’t forget, if you have a health plan, you don’t need to worry about extra costs as it’s covered on your plan.
Fleas and worms
Worms - dogs
Practically all dogs get worms. Treatment to kill worms is important, as they can affect your dog’s health and can be passed on to humans. It is not always easy to see that they have worms. If they have a heavy infestation you may notice them in their faeces.
Treatment options:
1) Spot on (liquid in a small pipette) - combined worm and flea treatments that are applied to the skin on the back of the neck. It is applied monthly and gives continuous protection against worms.
2) Tablets - Worm tablets will kill the worms at the time of taking the tablet. They do not give continuous protection or prevent re-infestation.
Fleas - dogs
These are tiny wingless insects approximately 2mm in length that bite your pet and drink its blood, making your dog itch. When the flea has finished its meal it jumps off your pets and lives in the surrounding environment - ie your home. They commonly transmit tapeworms and are the most common cause of allergic skin disease in dogs. If you see black grit on the skin, this is flea poo. Sometimes you might see tiny brown fleas crawling on your pet (but not seeing them does not mean they are not there.)
Treatment options:
1) Spot on (liquid in a small pipette) - which kills fleas and often combined with worm treatment. Prevent further infestation by applying every month. In severe cases we will prescribe a spray for the pet’s environment.
