Living conditions for pet birds

Pet birds need a spacious cage, good ventilation, and a consistent routine. They require daily access to fresh water, a balanced diet, mental stimulation, and time outside the cage. Temperature, lighting, and hygiene are key to keeping birds healthy and stress-free.

Diet for pet birds

Most birds need a diet based on high-quality pellets, supplemented with fresh vegetables, some fruit, and species-appropriate seeds. An all-seed diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies, so variety and balance are essential.

Do pet birds need regular veterinary visits?

Yes. Birds often hide signs of illness, so problems may be advanced before symptoms are obvious. Regular health checks help detect issues early, review diet and environment, and keep your bird in good long-term health.

How do I know if my bird is unwell

Birds are good at hiding illness. Watch for fluffed-up feathers, sitting low on the perch, reduced vocalising, appetite changes, behavioural changes or changes in droppings. If your bird seems quieter or “not quite right,” it’s worth getting checked.

Why is my bird plucking it's feathers?

Feather plucking can be caused by stress, boredom, medical issues, or environmental factors. It’s important to rule out underlying health problems first. Increasing enrichment, social interaction, and environmental stimulation can help prevent behavioural plucking.

Can I use scented products around my bird?

No. Birds are extremely sensitive to airborne toxins. Fumes, aerosols, candles, diffusers, and cleaning products should be avoided in rooms where your bird lives.

How do I keep my bird stimulate?

Birds are intelligent and require daily enrichment. Rotate toys regularly, provide foraging opportunities, offer safe chewable materials, and allow supervised out-of-cage time. Mental stimulation reduces stress and unwanted behaviours.

Do birds need their wings clipped?

Wing clipping is a personal choice and should always be performed correctly and humanely if at all. Some owners prefer to allow full flight for exercise and confidence, while others choose partial clipping for safety. We’re happy to advise on what’s best for your bird.
